  5. c09One    of    the    most    attractive
  6. possibilities    you    receive   when
  7. sticking  to your beloved AGA Amiga is
  8. to  get  a c10MAC II c09computer for 50,- DM
  9. without  any loss of speed compared to
  10. the  original hardware.  If you are in
  11. the   lucky   position   to   call   a
  12. graphicsboard  your  own, you even get
  13. 256  colours and a noticably increased
  14. performance  on  certain  tasks, which
  15. often  caused  users  of  the original
  16. c10Apple  c09computer  to astounded requests
  17. how  it  can  be that the emulation is
  18. faster  than  their computer?  The man
  19. who  made  all  of  this  possible  is
  20. called  c10Christian  Bauerc09,  who also is
  21. the   head  behind  the  famous  c10Frodo
  22. c09C-64  emulator  and  numberless  other
  23. emulators  and utilities on Amiga, MAC
  24. and BeOS.

  26. The  23 year-old student of Physics at
  27. the  Johannes-Gutenberg  University in
  28. Mainz/Germany  met  c10Generation  c09for  a
  29. short interview.

  32. f2c08  THE POWERPC AS COPROCESSOR DOESN'T
  33.           ATTRACT ME AT ALL
  34.

  36. f1c10You   are  highly  active  on  various
  37. projects on various systems and all of
  38. your  programs  enjoy highest interest
  39. by   users.    Do   you   think   that
  40. programming     might     sign    your
  41. professional  future?  For whom do you
  42. work at the moment being?
  43.  
  44. f4c09 "No,  also  as physician I guess will
  45. have to program enough.  At the moment
  46. I    work    as    student   for   the
  47. A1-Collaboration  at  the Mikrotron in
  48. Mainz." f1(laughs)

  51. f1c10Did you receive offers from Phase V or
  52. other  companies  for PowerPC-versions
  53. or   any   other   versions   of  your
  54. programs?
  55.  
  56. f4c09 "No,  not  really.  When ShapeShifter
  57. was  new,  some  were  interested  but
  58. there  have  never  been  any concrete
  59. negotiations.  I estimate this was the
  60. time  when  the  panic  because of the
  61. liquidation  of  Commodore was running
  62. around."

  65. f1c10Do you plan continueing to spread your
  66. programs as shareware?
  67.  
  68. f4c09 "Yes,  if possible.  I have made well
  69. experiences with that."
  70.

  72. f1c10Recently  it  has  become quite around
  73. Frodo  and  ShapeShifter on the Amiga.
  74. Will you keep on developing them here?
  75.  
  76. f4c09 "The developing has not been stopped,
  77. but if the negative trend of the Amiga
  78. contiues  like  that, it possibly will
  79. keep   by   some  minour  updates  and
  80. bugfixes only."
  81. f1c10Why  have  you  personally  sticked so
  82. long to the Amiga?  Do you consider to
  83. leave her for other systems now?
  84.  
  85. f4c09 "The Amiga still is the best computer
  86. for    fast   working;   means:    not
  87. specifically  for processing-intensive
  88. applications,     but     from     the
  89. handlingspeed.    Too   bad  it  looks
  90. pretty  dark  at the moment for usable
  91. alternatives  for  the  Amiga with the
  92. shite  Apple  is  creating  with their
  93. PowerPC computers."

  96. f2c08     THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER
  97.         MAC-EMULATOR ON AMIGA
  98.

  100. f1c10There    is    this   new   commercial
  101. MAC-emulator  for  the  Amiga.  Do you
  102. stand in any relation with it?
  103.  
  104. f4c09 "No."
  105.  
  106.  
  107. f1c10Do you think then, there is a need for
  108. a  further MAC-emulator for Amiga next
  109. to ShapeShifter?  Have you seen it?
  110.  
  111. f4c09 "No.   The  market for MAC-emulations
  112. on  the Amiga seems to be satiated.  I
  113. haven't seen it so far."

  116. f1c10Now  that  we  have the PowerPC-boards
  117. the  question remains if you intend to
  118. make  a ShapeShifter PPC-version.  Did
  119. you get yourself a card already?
  120.  
  121. f4c09 "No."
  122.

  124. f1c10And are you going to buy one?
  125.  
  126. f4c09 "I   don't  intend  to  do  so.   The
  127. concept  of  these  cards  (PowerPC as
  128. coprocessor)  doesn't  attract  me  at
  129. all."

  132. f1c10What  do you estimate:  How many hours
  133. did you invest in ShapeShifter?

  135. f4c09 "Oh dear!" f1(laughs)

  138. f2c08 THE DEMOSSCENE PROGRAMS EFFICIENTLY

  141. f1c10Are  you  interested in demos from the
  142. Scene?
  143.  
  144. f4c09 "On  C-64  only.   On  Amiga  I  have
  145. watched  five  to six demos in all the
  146. years  to  the maximum.  That's mostly
  147. since  my  monitor isn't able to do 15
  148. Khz.   But  on old computers demos are
  149. also mostly more fascinating (from the
  150. technical point of view)."

  153. f1c10Have  you  seen  some  which you still
  154. remember by name?
  155.  
  156. f4c09 "Surely, but only C-64."
  157.  
  158.  
  159. f1c10And?
  160.  
  161. f4c09"'Dawnfall',      'Access     Denied',
  162. 'Mathematica',   'Follow   the  Sign',
  163. 'Nothing  but  Code',  'Radio Napalm',
  164. the  'Koma  Light'-row,  but  also old
  165. things  like  the 'Think Twice'-Demos,
  166. the '1001'-Letters, and and and..."

  169. f1c10Are   you   able   to  understand  the
  170. fascination of a non-commercial Scene?
  171.  
  172. f4c09 "Yes,  at least there, people program
  173. efficiently!" f1(laughs)

  176. f1c10One    last   question   to   a   real
  177. Amiga-lover.   If  you were to decide:
  178. What  would  the  new Amiga look like,
  179. which  components  should be installed
  180. as standard?
  181.  
  182. f4c09 "The  best  would  be  one  takes the
  183. CHRP-design  and sets it up for one to
  184. n  processors.  Graphics and sound can
  185. be   made   with  standard  components
  186. splendidly.
  187. Yet  since  the hardware of a computer
  188. won't  play  such  a  big role anymore
  189. compared  to  the  past,  it  might be
  190. better  to  concentrate on the AmigaOS
  191. only; to clean it up thoroughly and to
  192. portiate it to modern hardware."
