- b3tInterview with...tRokDaZonethpf2s1c08 INTERVIEW WITH MR. SHAPESHIFTER

- c09One of the most attractive
- possibilities you receive when
- sticking to your beloved AGA Amiga is
- to get a c10MAC II c09computer for 50,- DM
- without any loss of speed compared to
- the original hardware. If you are in
- the lucky position to call a
- graphicsboard your own, you even get
- 256 colours and a noticably increased
- performance on certain tasks, which
- often caused users of the original
- c10Apple c09computer to astounded requests
- how it can be that the emulation is
- faster than their computer? The man
- who made all of this possible is
- called c10Christian Bauerc09, who also is
- the head behind the famous c10Frodo
- c09C-64 emulator and numberless other
- emulators and utilities on Amiga, MAC
- and BeOS.
-
- The 23 year-old student of Physics at
- the Johannes-Gutenberg University in
- Mainz/Germany met c10Generation c09for a
- short interview.
-
-
- f2c08 THE POWERPC AS COPROCESSOR DOESN'T
- ATTRACT ME AT ALL
-
-
- f1c10You are highly active on various
- projects on various systems and all of
- your programs enjoy highest interest
- by users. Do you think that
- programming might sign your
- professional future? For whom do you
- work at the moment being?
-
- f4c09 "No, also as physician I guess will
- have to program enough. At the moment
- I work as student for the
- A1-Collaboration at the Mikrotron in
- Mainz." f1(laughs)
-
-
- f1c10Did you receive offers from Phase V or
- other companies for PowerPC-versions
- or any other versions of your
- programs?
-
- f4c09 "No, not really. When ShapeShifter
- was new, some were interested but
- there have never been any concrete
- negotiations. I estimate this was the
- time when the panic because of the
- liquidation of Commodore was running
- around."
-
-
- f1c10Do you plan continueing to spread your
- programs as shareware?
-
- f4c09 "Yes, if possible. I have made well
- experiences with that."
-
-
- f1c10Recently it has become quite around
- Frodo and ShapeShifter on the Amiga.
- Will you keep on developing them here?
-
- f4c09 "The developing has not been stopped,
- but if the negative trend of the Amiga
- contiues like that, it possibly will
- keep by some minour updates and
- bugfixes only."
- f1c10Why have you personally sticked so
- long to the Amiga? Do you consider to
- leave her for other systems now?
-
- f4c09 "The Amiga still is the best computer
- for fast working; means: not
- specifically for processing-intensive
- applications, but from the
- handlingspeed. Too bad it looks
- pretty dark at the moment for usable
- alternatives for the Amiga with the
- shite Apple is creating with their
- PowerPC computers."
-
-
- f2c08 THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER
- MAC-EMULATOR ON AMIGA
-
-
- f1c10There is this new commercial
- MAC-emulator for the Amiga. Do you
- stand in any relation with it?
-
- f4c09 "No."
-
-
- f1c10Do you think then, there is a need for
- a further MAC-emulator for Amiga next
- to ShapeShifter? Have you seen it?
-
- f4c09 "No. The market for MAC-emulations
- on the Amiga seems to be satiated. I
- haven't seen it so far."
-
-
- f1c10Now that we have the PowerPC-boards
- the question remains if you intend to
- make a ShapeShifter PPC-version. Did
- you get yourself a card already?
-
- f4c09 "No."
-
-
- f1c10And are you going to buy one?
-
- f4c09 "I don't intend to do so. The
- concept of these cards (PowerPC as
- coprocessor) doesn't attract me at
- all."
-
-
- f1c10What do you estimate: How many hours
- did you invest in ShapeShifter?
-
- f4c09 "Oh dear!" f1(laughs)
-
-
- f2c08 THE DEMOSSCENE PROGRAMS EFFICIENTLY
-
-
- f1c10Are you interested in demos from the
- Scene?
-
- f4c09 "On C-64 only. On Amiga I have
- watched five to six demos in all the
- years to the maximum. That's mostly
- since my monitor isn't able to do 15
- Khz. But on old computers demos are
- also mostly more fascinating (from the
- technical point of view)."
-
-
- f1c10Have you seen some which you still
- remember by name?
-
- f4c09 "Surely, but only C-64."
-
-
- f1c10And?
-
- f4c09"'Dawnfall', 'Access Denied',
- 'Mathematica', 'Follow the Sign',
- 'Nothing but Code', 'Radio Napalm',
- the 'Koma Light'-row, but also old
- things like the 'Think Twice'-Demos,
- the '1001'-Letters, and and and..."
-
-
- f1c10Are you able to understand the
- fascination of a non-commercial Scene?
-
- f4c09 "Yes, at least there, people program
- efficiently!" f1(laughs)
-
-
- f1c10One last question to a real
- Amiga-lover. If you were to decide:
- What would the new Amiga look like,
- which components should be installed
- as standard?
-
- f4c09 "The best would be one takes the
- CHRP-design and sets it up for one to
- n processors. Graphics and sound can
- be made with standard components
- splendidly.
- Yet since the hardware of a computer
- won't play such a big role anymore
- compared to the past, it might be
- better to concentrate on the AmigaOS
- only; to clean it up thoroughly and to
- portiate it to modern hardware."
